2024 Players Countdown to first tee shot

“I got my little one up there watching.”

For the 41-year-old Colombian, this win, his first in nine years, meant more than breaking a dry spell. It was a heart-felt moment dedicated to his daughter Mia, who lost her battle with cancer at just 22 months old.

Villegas, reflecting on the triumph and challenges of life, said, "I love this game, but in the process, it kicks your butt. Life has given me so many great things, but in the process, it kicks my butt too."

Villegas' journey in golf had seen highs and lows, from early career successes to a major medical extension due to personal tragedy. After missing cuts and battling through a major shoulder surgery, he found himself back in contention in Cabo and carried that momentum to Bermuda.

This victory not only ended Villegas' regular season outside the top 200 in the FedEx Cup but also secured his PGA Tour card for the next two seasons. A stark contrast to his initial plan of flying out for the second stage of Q-School.

As friends showered him in champagne after the win, Villegas, with arms outstretched, dedicated the triumph to Mia, knowing that his little one was watching from above, smiling.

Controversial Pause: Hong Kong Open's 15-Minute Delay

New Zealand's Ben Campbell clinched victory with birdies on the final two holes, but not without a dramatic dispute involving Cameron Smith and Thailand's Phachara Khongwatmai that led to a 15-minute delay that had everyone scratching their heads.

As per Rule 8.0 in the Rules of Golf, which dictates playing the course as it (the ball) is found, the frustration stemmed from actions that may improve conditions affecting the stroke.

Khongwatmai's attempt to maneuver around the natural obstacles led to a prolonged discussion, rolling eye balls among fellow competitors (cough cough Cam Smith & Ben Cambell).

He and his caddie did some landscaping for nearly 15 minutes in the area before hitting the shot. He was leading at the time. Both Cam Smith and Ben Cambell were frustrated. No penalty was given.

I guess since the Tiger-boulder decision, it seems anything goes.🤷

Rule 8.1: “A player must not take any of these actions if they improve the conditions affecting the stroke: (1) Move, bend or break any: Growing or attached natural object, Immovable obstruction, integral object or boundary object or tee-marker for the teeing area when playing a ball from that teeing area.”

Khongwatmai: “I’m just moving the dead trees”

Cam Smith: “see the green bits? That’s means it’s alive mate”

In the end Golf Karma got to him. On the 18th, Smith nearly holed his third shot, and secured par to finish at 18-under-par. Campbell's birdie putt, on the other hand, sealed the win at 19 under. Khongwatmai shared third place at 17 under after a three-putt bogey.

The King of the Jungle: Homa Away from Home

You won't believe who joined the Sunday showdown at the Nedbank Golf Challenge – Hint: It's not a golfer!🦁

Max Homa brought his A-game to South Africa, clinching victory at the Nedbank Golf Challenge with a stellar 6-under 66 on Sunday. This win marks Homa's first triumph abroad, and he did it in style, finishing at 19 under for the tournament, a remarkable 4 shots ahead of Nicolai Hojgaard.

Homa's final round featured a spectacular mix of six birdies, an eagle, and two bogeys.

Dubbed "Africa's Major," the Nedbank Golf Challenge is a standout event on the European tour calendar, setting the stage for the upcoming DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. Justin Thomas, playing on an invitation, finished in fourth place at 12 under.

As Homa basks in the glory of this international victory, he expressed gratitude, saying, "It's just been tremendous to get to travel to a new place, meet so many amazing people. The fans have been amazing; everyone has been so welcoming and kind. To be granted the opportunity to even be here, I was truly grateful for, but to come out with a trophy is just cherry on top."

And where was Adam Hadwin’s bodyguard when this happened?
